It is common and very unpleasant. It is triggered by acid refluxes backing up into your esophagus.

Heartburns are caused by many factors of which the common ones are caused by our lifestyles.

Basically, watching what we eat, how we eat, when we eat, among others and a little tweak in our lifestyle would do the trick.
Long term heart burns can cause complications such as strictures and inflammation in the oesophagus and in rare cases it can also cause cancer. Due to the unpleasant sensations caused by heartburns, you would need a quick relief when it sets in.

Antacids are often used is treating heartburns and the commonly used is calcium and it is also the active ingredient in most antacids but you would want to use some home relief remedies if you want to cut out the drug intake in your system.

These strategies can help ease the discomfort caused by Heartburns

  • WATCH WHAT YOU EAT
    Increasing fiber intake in your meals, the fiber helps keep your digestive system healthy and moving. Also, try to avoid foods that trigger your heartburn and keep an eye on citrus fruits and juices , onions, tomatoes, high-fat foods, caffeine, sodas, peppermint and spicy foods.

    You will have to push the dinner time at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime so that your stomach will get enough time to digest the food food before you go to bed.

    Eat slowly, smaller parts and spaced through out the day.
    Overeating puts a lot of pressure on the stomach whether it is caused by not spacing out eating times through out the day, obesity or pregnancy. Stomach acid is turned up when the stomach senses that it has taken a large amount in a short time in order to aid digestion. When acid-forming foods are taken in a large quantity, some of the contents can lea back into the esophagus there by causing heartburns. in order to prevent that, take smaller portions of food at regular intervals space out through the day. And also try not to watch TV whiles eating because research has shown that who watch TV whiles eating tend to overeat than not watching TV.

  • EXERCISE REGULARLY
    Exercise regularly to shed off a few pounds of fat. Belly fat can press against the stomach walls forcing acid to back up in to the esophagus.

  • KEEP A DIARY
    Keeping a diary on the foods you eat can also be really helpful. This can help you know the foods that trigger the heartburns and you can try to avoid them or cut out its level of consumption.

    It is about time and probably the best time to quit smoking in order to prevent heartburns and for many other health reasons. Research has shown that, smoking reduces the effectiveness of the muscles that keep acids in the stomach.

    You might want to ditch your skin-tight jeans. They add pressure to your abdomen forcing the contents in the stomach back up in to your esophagus.

You also chew gum can also help relief the pain. When chewing gum, lots of saliva is produced which acts a buffer to the acid in your stomach. You also swallow a lot when chewing gum which pushes back the acid that is been traveled up your esophagus.

Consult your doctor right away if you experience lots of hoarseness, worsening of asthma after meals, pain that’s persistent following exercise, difficulty breathing that occurs mainly at night and trouble swallowing for more than one to two days.
