An itchy eye is a very common thing for most people. You will probably experience an itchy eye once or even twice throughout your life as it can easily happen. We all have a habit of rubbing our eyes especially when we are busy with something that can cause our eyes to become itchy.  It can include working with foods that are spicy or even working in the garden outside. People say that their eyes are itchy but it is the eyelids that are itchy.

There is a variety of different reasons that can make the eyelids itch

It is not easy to really distingue what was the exact cause of our eyelid to be itchy. However, here is some common reason that can cause your eyelids to be itchy.

• If your eye is dry. Dry eyes.

• A cold can also make your eye itchy or the flu.

• Any allergies will generally make the eyes itchy.

• Too little sleep causes tiredness, that can cause your eyes to become itchy.

• Having conjunctivitis.

• You might develop blepharitis, that is caused by having an infection in the eye and can be caused by many different reasons.

• Stye, also a sort of infection condition of the eye.

• An oil gland that is blocked or has inflammation in the eye (chalazion).

An itchy eye is not really something that you should worry about. If your eye is itchy you can simply put eye drops in, rinse your face and eye with water or go and sleep for a little bit. Typically, the itchiness goes away as it is not a long term irritation.  The best thing you can do that is a very good habit to get into, is to wash your hand before you touch, not just your eyes but your entire face.

You can also try and avoid things that make your eyes itchy. If you have allergies that constantly bother you, you should get medication to help with your allergies, to reduce the allergic reaction you have.  When your eye or eyes are itchy, try to not scratch your eye as you might end up with a bigger problem like a scratched cornea.  You can also try to apply a cool compression to the eye to help with any discomfort. If there is any other sign that accompanies the itchy eye, make an appointment with your doctor because it can be something really bad like a serious condition or illness.
