Cryotherapy: Usage, benefits and effects

Cryotherapy is a series of chemical reactions within our body that promotes cell health, as well as increases and improves blood circulation. These are some of its benefits:

  • It makes the heart muscle work by increasing its volumes, especially diastolic filling, but not its heart rate.
  • It favors the action of insulin improving the levels of simple sugar in blood. In addition, it increases the correct secretion of pancreatic enzymes, such as insulin, or hepatic enzymes, such as transaminases.
  • It helps the circulation of gastric substances and, therefore, their stomach digestion, as well as the evacuation of feces at the level of the large intestine. It also improves the intestinal muscles.
  • It favors the absorption of food substances in the small intestine, as well as the absorption of type B vitamins at the intestinal level.
  • It improves the circulation and the transit of the substances of the porta system, with which the organism manages to eliminate better toxic substances accumulated in the soft tissues such as muscles, tendons or joints.

Due to its numerous benefits, cryotherapy can have various applications both in the world of sport and in aesthetics.

Cryotherapy for athletes

Cryotherapy can be for many different people, although perhaps one of its star applications is in the world of sports medicine. This is because it helps to treat sports injuries of different kinds, since it is great for fibrillar micro-tears, tendonitis, tendinosis, muscle overloads, etc.

In addition, the fact that it improves the heart muscle, blood circulation or the elimination of harmful substances means that the athlete can increase their marks and optimize their effort both in training and in competitions.

In the case of athletes, cryotherapy is also very useful after an intense exercise session, since, in addition to promoting muscle recovery, mitigates, things such as blowsand soreness.

Cryotherapy as an aesthetic treatment

As an aesthetic treatment, cryotherapy has, in the words of Jordi Riba, "effects on skin and hair almost immediate, by eliminating the vast majority of toxins in the body", so it is useful in treating skin disorders such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, eczema, sallow skin and cellulite ...

In addition, after a minute and a half of application, the patient stops burning simple sugar and begins to burn fat, so it is also effective to lose weight. However, it is important not to confuse cryotherapy with cryolipolysis, a non-invasive aesthetic treatment that helps eliminate fat through the external application of cold through a plate that cools the fat cells and facilitates their decomposition and subsequent elimination.

Contraindications of cryotherapy

However, cryotherapy also has contraindications and not everyone can try it. The technique is essentially an accelerator of metabolism, so all those who suffer pathologies in which the organism (whether by congenital or secondary cause) is not able to maintain vascular compensation mechanisms should not perform this sanitary technique.

Patients who have suffered a myocardial infarction, any severe or severe vascular pathology, who have a history of thromboembolism or who suffer from Raynaud's syndrome (cold allergy) are discarded for cryotherapy. Also, pregnant women should not undergo cryotherapy.
