Supermarket Of The Future Opens In Italy

in #health8 years ago

Italy's largest supermarket chain Coop has recently partnered with MIT professor Carlo Ratti in order to try and develop and introduce the world's first supermarket of the future.

The new 11,000 sq ft store which is now open in Milan, Italy, offers a futuristic shopping experience that is said to be like none you've ever had before. Every item is meticulously tracked and cataloged, and whenever a shopper wants to know more about a particular item all they have to do is hold that item up to an overhead display and then it will reveal further facts and information about that item.

There are Microsoft Kinect sensors that are built into the mirrored display and they are able to identify the items that are held up to the overhead display. Customers can find out information about possible allergens, pricing, promotions, and more.

It is alleged that there are plans to expand the concept to other countries as well, so who knows how long it might be before you have a market in your own neighborhood that is equipped with this technology. It's not that far off from what we are able to do now, which is use our smartphones to scan a number of products on the shopping aisles in order to find out further information about the products that we commonly purchase. This will be just a more convenient way of going about getting that information and more.

Elsewhere in the futuristic store there is also a 65-foot-long visualization wall that contains a number of monitors that can display a myriad of cooking suggestions and popular selling items.

The creators say that they hope that shoppers might linger for awhile in the stores or that they might strike-up conversations with one another, thanks to the design of the low bookcase-like shelves that are lined with numerous items.

The market's designers believe that more data will be able to help shoppers to make better and more informed decisions about what they are eating and that has been one of the main motivations for going the route of developing this store. There is the opportunity for those who want to come in and make their purchases quickly to go ahead and be able to do that, but there is also going to be an environment that caters to those who want to spend a little more time doing their shopping.
