Yesterday I had a patient in my clinic diagnosed with autism and his parents didn't know how to deal with it. So I realized that it's very important for me to share with you some basic knowledge about disorder. Also, CDC estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in 68 children in the United States and 24.8 million people globally are diagnosed with it.

WHAT IS AUTISM?

It is a brain disorder that often makes it hard to communicate with and to socialize with others. In the autism, different parts of brain fail to work together so individuals have various spectrum of symptoms. That's why it is also called Autism Spectrum Disorder.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF AUTISM?

It tends to run in the family but there are also some environmental factors involved like Rubella infection , or cocaine and alcohol use during pregnancy.
I know that there are a lot of claims a link between autism and vaccines but I need you to know that studies haven't found a link between vaccines and autism. Its very important that your child gets all vaccines. They prevent them from some serious illnesses that can cause even death.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF AUTISM?

Symptoms almost always start before a child is 3 years old and they include:

  • A delay in learning to talk, or not talking at all

  • Repeat words or phrases over and over

  • Give unrelated answers to questions

  • Get upset by minor routines change

  • Have obsessive interests

  • Avoids eye-contact

  • Prefers to play alone

  • Does not share interests with others

HOW IS AUTISM TREATED?

Treatment involves special behavioral training where specialist try to teach children social skills and how to communicate and how to help themselves as they grow older.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM?

Its very hard in the beginning to accept the fact that your child has autism. But its very important that you get your child started in treatment early. If you know your child is engaged in meaningful activities, you will be more able to focus on moving forward.

Don't hesitate to use whatever support is available to you and also join some support group. But the most important part is to have some semblance of an adult life. Be careful to not let autism consume every waking hour of your life.

Great post! Autism is present in many branches of my family tree. My eldest son and I both present as "high functioning," and what I described in my perseveration post is something we both do. In fact, his diagnosis is what made sense of me. :)

He is also lucky to have you as a parent who understands him completely :)
