A NEW LIFE

A new life begins when an egg of a woman and a sperm of a man join together and form a fertilized ovule. Together, the sperm and the egg contain the information needed to form a new person. The fertilized egg multiplies and transforms into a baby that grows inside the woman's body.

A fertilized egg takes nine months to become a fully developed baby. During that period, the egg divides several times to produce the many millions of cells that are needed to form a human being. At the beginning it is called embryo. At eight weeks, the growing baby is called a fetus. The fetus is attached to its mother by the placenta, which provides it with food and oxygen.

WITHIN A MAN

The sperm are produced in the man's testicles, which are inside a bag of skin called scrotum. The sperm move through small tubes and out of the body through the penis.

WITHIN A WOMAN

The woman's valves are inside the ovaries and every month only one is released. He travels slowly through the fallopian tube. If you encounter a sperm, it can be fertilized. A fertilized egg takes about six days to reach the uterus, where it becomes a baby.

FERTILIZATION

After the sperm enter the woman's body, they swim through the fallopian tubes. If there is an egg in the tube, the sperm surround it. Only one of them breaks the outer membrane and fertilizes the ovum. The fertilized egg divides and an embryo forms, which is then deposited in the uterus.

GROW AND GROW

The cells of the fetus divide quickly. The groups of cells become different parts of the body, such as the heart, lungs, brain, hands and feet. At eight weeks, the fetus already has a human appearance but is only 2.5 cm long. At 38 weeks (9 months), the fetus is ready to be born.

UMBILICAL CONNECTION

The placenta is attached to the wall of the uterus. The food and oxygen contained in maternal blood pass from the placenta to the fetus through the umbilical cord. After birth, the umbilical cord is cut. This forms a dimple in the baby's stomach called navel.

READY TO BE BORN

When the baby is ready to be born, the muscular walls of the maternal uterus push it out through the neck of the uterus and into the vagina. Most babies are born head first. The placenta leaves the body of the mother a few minutes later.

NEWBORN

Babies begin to breathe the moment they are born. When the umbilical cord is cut, the baby is separated from the mother's body and begins to live on her own.
