Why parents take their babies and infants to the chiropractor...
One of the most challenging experiences for new mums and dads, is a baby that is unsettled.
Whilst GP's and Paediatricians may put this down as "some babies are just like that"... insight into the forces experienced during the birthing process, and in particular to the neck or cervical spine, see some parents taking their bubs to the chiropractor.
Even during a seemingly 'normal' head first vaginal delivery upward of 140-170lbs of pulling pressure can be transmitted through the cervical spine, contributing to birth trauma.
If the delicate bones and joints within the developing spine are misaligned or traumatised, this can lead to the baby feeling pain and discomfort, experiencing difficulty feeding, and even favouring the comfortable side to feed and sleep.
What will the chiropractor do for the baby?
Chiropractors are trained to identify these sick spinal segments (or subluxations) and provide a gentle adjustment, restoring movement and alignment to the vertebra, easing pressure on the soft tissues and restoring functions to the nervous system. The pressure used during an adjustment on a baby is similar to the pressure you could safely place on your own eyeball with your finger, and many chiropractors utilise an instrument called an 'activator' to ensure the adjustment is as gentle as possible.
