I have a cataract!

in #health7 years ago

During a recent eye check up I found out I have a cataract. It’s not "mature" but it’s bad enough I can't get new glasses to sharpen my focus.

I see double most of the time, especially while focusing or when I am tired.

Sometimes words will blend, or I'll see two of one letters. It makes me so dizzy.

The other night I was walking into the family room and missed the doorway partly—so half of me hit the wall and the other half of me got through the door.

I see halos around lights at night so driving is a real challenge.

Generally though I am super sensitive to light during the day. In fact I have to dim the brightness on my phone and computer.

Unfortunately I am finding it difficult to edit my photos. It's hard to know if a photo is in or out of focus.

Having the one cataract removed will cause another problem.

Once the cataract is removed, the surgeon will implant an intraoccular lens which will correct my vision so I won't need to wear glasses. Sounds great, but my other eye is still in need of corrective lenses. I’m concerned I’ll be dizzier... imbalanced.

What is a cataract?

The lenses in your eyes become less flexible, thicker and cloudy. Most cataracts are age related, some are from medical conditions or medications.

As the cataract “ripens” it becomes thicker and involves more of the lens causing vision problems.

Some have said it is like looking through waxed paper. Thankfully mine isn’t like that.

There are different kinds. The kind I have causes the double and blurred vision.

Cataracts generally develop in both eyes, but not evenly. The cataract in one eye may be worse than the other, causing a difference in vision between eyes.

So, surgery will be upcoming sometime in the new year. After that I will have to go through the several prescription changes in my glasses to support the other eye.

I went through this - so annoying, but thank God for modern medicine - You'll feel so much better one day later :)

I have both eyes affected with cataract and I decided to have them both removed for artificial ones..but the young doctor said..he can only operate one eye at a time. In the operating room, he told me he will operate both which I agreed.. 2 days after the new lenses.. I had to adjust on all things I see, they were so sharp and full of colors..even billboards are so clear in a distant. As I am far sighted..I need reading glasses..Am so happy to have the operation done at once and its been 8 years now and I didn't have problems whatsoever.

Thanks for sharing your experience @mers. Wow...I can't wait to see as clearly as everyone else has experienced. I don't know if my surgeon will do both - I see him next week. It all depends on how bad the other eye is I suppose. But I figure why wait until it gets worse? It costs so much to keep having my prescriptions changed!

Sorry to hear. My dad had cataracts and I think they had to scrape it from the surface of his eyes. Good thing is that he said it did hurt but his eyes were irritated for several days after the surgery. Hope when you get the surgery, it turns out well.

Oh good to know. I like hearing other people's outcomes. Thank you for the well wishes, I appreciate it.

I wanted to read some of your posts but you haven't posted anything yet. I guess you post by commenting. I still added you to people I follow.

Yeah, I'm slow. I joined about a week ago and I was reading other people's post to get a handle on how to do it without looking stupid. I just put up my first post. If you read it don't laugh to hard. It's about me repairing a van, not too interesting. Thank you for following, I'm trying to get better.

I'll bet you'll do really well. You are personable from the comments I've read. I will read your post - and I promise I won't laugh unless you intentionally make a joke :)

Thank you for your support. If you do laugh, I'll be right there laughing with you. Have a nice day.

I am so looking forward to New Heavens and New Earth...

New eyes! Woo-Hoo! :D

😄😇😄

@creatr

me too! We'll need new eyes bc we'll be walking by sight then.....I want a clear view, thank you very much. :)

I have had both eyes done. What a blessing. Now I can see and don't have all the nasty things associated with cataracts. They no longer do scrapping of the cornea. Everything is done by laser and you recover quickly.

Oh good to know! They emulsify the plaque I think. But they still cut into the cornea which I am not looking forward to. I had a few scratches on my cornea from wearing contacts years ago - so painful. I think my husband got numbing drops to use for a few days. I am looking forward to seeing clearer that's for sure. I didn't realize how bad things were until I used my camera and the pics were out of focus bc I was. Funny how that happens. I think I am just nervous about them working on my eye while I am awake and can see what they are doing. I'll be fine.

No one likes to think about someone mucking about in your eye. Laser surgery is quick and you will have drops to take for about a week. It's not that bad and you see the difference immediately, just how clear and bright everything is without the cataract.

That totally sucks! I feel for you. And I hope you get the other eye corrected so you can have balanced vision. What is the plan for that?

I'm not sure if they'll do the other eye yet bc that cataract is very young still. Maybe they'll have pity on me and do both. I seriously do have thick glasses, I have to order special thin lenses from Germany but they are still thicker than everyone else's. It does suck. I see the specialist again in a week or two so I'll find out then.
