Is Social Media Ruining Our Self Acceptance?

in #health5 years ago

When we look around at each others Facebook, Instagram or Twitter what do we see.

We see everyone excelling in a particular area, the best parts of their lives, their most exciting moments and we don’t see the rest.

We constantly compare ourselves to their highlights.

If our lives aren’t as exciting it can me us feel inferior.

We compare how many likes we have to the next person, who they’ve been hanging around with, what event they’ve last gone to.

In our brains this can translate to them living this amazing life and we’re not.

What does this do to us?

Constantly comparing leads us to criticise ourselves and believe we’re not good enough.

There’s an important link between self acceptance and self-esteem. Social media is making it harder for us to accept ourselves which is one of the reasons the rate of depression is increasing.

You don’t need to take into consideration anything that anyone else is doing to accept yourself.

You are good enough. We’re all on our own paths. We all excel at different things. Some of them hidden.

You don’t want to be like anyone else anyway,  you want to be you with your own unique experiences because that’s what makes life interesting. Your only really seeing a small portion of their lives.

Not all of it is as exciting as you think it is and hey pictures and videos can make things appear better than they actually are.

If there are areas in your life which you want to sort out then take action on them but your great as you are trust me.

You’re a king/queen in your own right.

You can’t wait until ‘everything’s perfect’ and then your okay because that’s never going to happen. Your human and humans make mistakes so accept yourself in the present moment whilst striving to improve.

Don’t wait for completion of an external goal. Let go of comparing yourself to this representation on social media because it really isn’t an accurate view of reality.

That's one of the many things I like about Steemit and Minds. They can be used like traditional social media platforms, but most people actually use them for sharing thoughts like you have done in this post. People share poetry, photography, controversial ideas that have been censored elsewhere and more. I agree that the other social media sites can be toxic. I only use them for business myself.

Thank you so much! It's true we love the openness of the steem it platform and social media should be used wisely.
