Alcohol And Nervous System
Alcohol is the ingredient found in beer, wine and spirits that causes intoxication. Alcohol is a drug. It is classified as a depressant, meaning it slows down vital functions resulting in slowing down of speech, unsteady movement and inability to react quickly. As long as it affects the mind it’s classed as a drug that affects a person ability to think rationally and distorts his/her judgement.
Although it’s classed as a depressant the quantity of alcohol consumed determines the type of effect. A glass of wine or beer is taken to loosen up. But if a person consumes more than the body can handle, they experience alcohol depressant effects. They start to act stupid or loose coordination and control. Overdose intake of alcohol causes even more depressant effects such as inability to feel pain, unconsciousness or worse, coma or death from severe toxic overdose.
Beer contains 2%-6% alcohol
Cider contains 4%-8% alcohol
Wine contains 8%-20% alcohol
Tequila contains 40% alcohol
Vodka contains 40%-50% alcohol
Effects of alcohol on the nervous system
The nervous system coordinates the action an animal by transmitting signal to and from different parts of its body.
In vertebrates it consists of two main parts, the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The effects of alcohol on the nervous system are numerous, these can be divided into three categories;
- acute intoxication
- chronic usage
- Withdrawal
Excess or long term intake of alcohol leads to;
• Cytotoxic i.e cell poisoning
• Memory loss
• Seizures are also possible
• Inability to process logic
• Personality changes
• impaired vision
• Sensitive muscle
• Liver cancer
• Might finally lead to death.
The only way to avoid the negative effects of alcohol on the nervous system is to stay sober.😅
