Yesterday, while I'm waiting to take medicine at a pharmacy, i see a lot of people flocking to a eye clinic Hospital Queen Elizabeth, Kota Kinabalu. I'm surprised, because it was Sunday, and why so many people come. I moved go and see what exactly was going on there. Ohh! I see! Apparently, there is a free glaucoma eye screening and eye examination for pubic.

According to the doctors there, glaucoma was call"sneak thief of vision", because most people don’t have any sign or symptom, and first sign is often a loss of vision or blindless(unnoticed until late in the disease). But, blindness from glaucoma can often be prevented with have a regular eye examinations(when your are still youn), and early treatment.

They also provide reflexology booth on that day!

I love my eyes, and i'm sure you too. Im not master about this disease, but i am concern about it, and so decided to share a bit info about glaucoma for your all my fellows steemians. I am not go deeper about it, just a simple information. Thank you!

What is Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that will damages your eye’s optic nerve, when the fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. Where the extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, thus damage the optic nerve.

Causing Loss of vision!

If the damage continues, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss(blindness). According to researchs state that, glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness for worldwide, second after cataracts, especially those people over 60 years old.

Unfortunately, very hard to detected early signs of glaucoma because most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain. The only way to take care of you eye from this disease is that you need to see your Ophthalmologist(eye doctor), regularly so they can diagnose and treat glaucoma before long-term visual loss happens.

Who's more likely to get it?

• It can occur at any ages, but most those over 40yrs and above in both gender.

• People those african-American, Irish, Russian, Japanese and Hispanic most probably will get this disease(racial ancestry)

• Had family history of glaucoma(genetic)

• People who have diabetes.

• Taken steroid medication for long term(certain steroid) like prednisolone.

• Have trauma to the eye(causes poor vision).

Please seek your nearly doctors if your have this following symptoms

• Loss of vision.

• Seeing halos around lights, especially in the morning.

• Redness in the eye.

• Nausea or vomiting and dizziness.

• Any type of eye pain.

• Narrowed vision or tunnel vision.

How the physicians manage glaucoma

Upon the conversation with the doctors and staff there, the will use this following test to detect glaucoma:

• Visual Field Test (VFT)
• Tonometry
• Ophtalmoscopy
• Optical coherence tomography
  Others:
• Gonioscopy
• Pachymetry

After the diagnosis was made, they will decided what type of treatment can be use, either:

1.Eye drops

2.Surgery-Traberculectomy, or

3.Laser therapy

• iridotomy
• trabeculoplasty
• cyclo-ablation

Conclusion

Glaucoma is a disease that can be controlled, where the treatment actually can make the intraocular pressure into normal, thus prevent of further nerve damage, and visual loss. The early detection of glaucoma will determind the prognosis, if the diagnosis was made before the optic nerve damage occur and compliant with medication, the prognosis was good.
