Lol, so much for my post introduction. Let's get right to it, fruits and vegetables, what are they and why do we need them?

Fruits are the sweet edible parts of plants and most often they are seed bearing and these seeds are used for growing more sweet fruits.
Vegetable on the other hand as described by the Oxford dictionary is any plant grown for it's edible parts such as leaf, fruits, roots, or flower, excluding grains, spice and any plant specifically consider to be fruit.
Did you know that yam and potatoes are vegetables and coffee is a fruit??
Fruits and vegetables contains a lot of minerals and vitamins that the body needs for growth, maintenance and repairs. Fruits and vegetables should be a very important part of our diet as they are naturally nutritious and can help our body system get stronger and prevent the out break of certain diseases and health issue.

Some vitamins and minerals contained in most fruits includes, vitamin A, C, E, Folic acid, zinc, magnesium. Don't you just love fruits already, I mean they are rich and sweet, well not all of them are though but a vast majority is. When I thought it can't get any better, you realize that fruits and vegetables are high sources of good dietary fiber, low fat, salt and sugar content. Fruits and vegetables also helps in weight loss and weight maintenance.

Maintains healthy weight and reduces obseity
Lowers risk of heart disease
Lowers high blood pressure
Fruits and vegetables are alkaline producing and this helps in bone mass and muscle tissue preservation
Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals and phytonutrients
Fruits and vegetables have high moisture content, helping to keep the body hydrated
Often times I wonder if the color of fruits and vegetables have any form of significance and today while reading through a few journals so I could get the right information for this post I learnt that they actually do and here is a few.
Blue and purple colored fruits like the berries and egg plants are that way because they contain ANTHOCYANINS and this substance protects the body against cancer.
Green colored vegetables, aside from photosynthesis, veggies like kale, spinach, pumpkin and green pepper contains LUTEIN and ZEAXANTHIN and this helps with the eye sight.
Red colored fruits like the water melon, tomatoes and pepper contains LYCOPENE, a very important component in the fight against prostate cancer and major cardiovascular diseases.
Fruits and vegetables are awesome!
Try to eat a lot more of them to stay healthy and don't forget to wash them properly.
