The truth about tampons and pads! (Explained simply)

An average woman has her period for 2,280 days ( or 6.24 years YIKES! ) in her lifetime.

NOW THAT IS A HELL OF A LOT OF TIME RIGHT?

And because this is such a long time in a woman's life, it is MEGA important to be aware of what we are putting up or around our beautiful lady parts when that time of the month is here.

So without further ado, I present to you all the terrible reasons why you should stop wearing pads and tampons!
When you are reading the points below, remember that the vulva's skin is one of the most permeable on the body meaning that whatever you put onto it, the skin is going to absorb it and go straight into the bloodstream.

  • They are full of nasty chemicals that wreck havoc on your system and the risk of getting all these terrible diseases that you really dont want to have!

Due to tampons and pads being labelled as a medical devices, companies are not required to put the ingredients on the packaging. Even though tampons and pads have chemicals in them such as phtalates ( suspected endocrine disruptors) and dioxins ( World Health Organization claims these are highly toxic and are known carcinogenic. Or in other words, by using these products you put yourself at risk for cancer!).Plus rayon is used in tampons and pads. Over exposure to rayon can induce vomiting, nausea, chest pain, headaches and many more.

  • They cause your vulva to dry out.

A study showed that when women switched from tampons to using a menstrual cup a whopping 66% had a decrease in vaginal dryness. Or if you flip the coin around, they had a 66% increase in vaginal moistness. Which I think is pretty brilliant!

  • One sanitary pad holds the equivalent of 4 plastic bags.

Plastic is one of the main ingredients in making conventional sanitary pads. The possible horrible side effects of plastic being absorbed into the body are disrupting embryonic development, heart disease, multiple organ damage and more. Plus the simple fact that plastic doesn't allow the precious vagina to air ( WHICH IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!) meaning women are more prone to yeast and bacterial infections ( NO FUN! ). Plus I think we can all agree that the world has already too much plastic right?

  • It is EXPENSIVE as hell!

Some wonderful people over at Huffington Post worked out that an average women spends roughly $1200 USD on tampons and pads ONLY! Not forgetting all the other expenses that come with bleeding monthly such as painkillers and buying new underwear because of stains.)

Now, I can go and on and on about this and how terribly horrible it all is, but I think you know enough now.

And to not shock you any further, I'll let this sink in for a bit.
Tomorrow I'll post on what alternatives there are!

Did you know about all these terrible chemicals in female hygiene products?
Are you shocked by the potential deadly illnesses women can get from using conventional tampons and pads?
Or did you realize how expensive it all is?

BIG love,

Ashley
