What is the origin of dandruff?
Dandruff is nothing more than the accelerated and visible scaling of the scalp. This cosmetic problem is usually due to the overgrowth of the yeast Pityrosporium ovale, one of the resident microbes in the scalp.
In a normal situation, the upper layer of the epidermis - the horny layer - is constantly renewed. The cells are born at the base of the epidermis and gradually move towards the stratum corneum. There they keratinize and firmly adhere to one another to form between 25 and 35 cell layers. The outer ones, when dried, are eliminated almost imperceptibly.
In people with dandruff, the stratum cornea appears altered. The elimination of mature cells occurs in compact groups that form a kind of greasy pellets of whitish or yellowish color. These are called dandruff scales.
