Vitamins - Some sources and their Deficiency Diseases

The term Vitamine was coined from the word vital+amine since the earlier identified compounds had amino groups.Later work showed that most of them did not contains amino groups.so the letter e was drooped and the term vitamin is used these days..

Vitamin A ::::
Sources :: Fish,liver oil,carrots,butter and milk
Deficiency :: Xerophthalmia(Hardening of
cornea of eye) Night blindness

Vitamin B1(Thiamine)::::
Sources :: Yeast,milk,green vegetables and
cereals
Dificiency ::Beri beri (loss of appetite,retarded
growth)

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin):::
Sources ::Milk,eggwhite,liver,kidney
Deficiency::Cheilosis (fissuring at corners of
mouth and lips),digestive
disorders and burning sensation of
the skin

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine):::
Sources. :::Yeast,milk,egg yolk,cereals and grams
Deficiency:::Convulsions

Vitamin B12 :::
Sources ::Meat,fish,egg and curd
Deficiency ::Pernicious anaemia (RBC dificient in haemoglobin)

Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid):::
Sources ::Citrus fruits,amla and green leafty vegetables
Deficiency :: Scurvy (bleeding gums)

Vitamin D
Sources ::Exposure to sunlight,fish and egg yolk
Deficiency ::Rickets (bones deformittes in children)and osteomalaria (soft bones and joint pain in adults)

Vitamin E :::
Sources ::: Vegetable oil like wheat germ oil,sunflower oil,etc..
Deficiency ::: Increased fragility of RBCs and muscular weakness

Vitamin K
Sources ::: Green leafy vegetables
Deficiency::: Increased blood clotting time
