AncientMystique------->Radioactive Fire alarms in your home?!!!

in #health7 years ago

Holyyyy Smokes Steemit'ers....

(Mind the pun)

This morning the fire alarms went off they're rockers.......
So I went a bit crazy at them....
And I am so glad I did.....

These mofo's are radioactive!!!!

Did you know that???

I am all about informed consent-And I don't even own a microwave for that reason! (I feel I am making informed decisions for my family-regardless what anyone else thinks)

I am pissed! How is that, it is not widely known that this [ACTUAL] potentially life saving device is also on another hand emitting radiation every single day?
How many do you have in your home? 3? 4? 5?

I would love to be able to say that I found unbiased scientific data to back up the statement, "Its no worse than background radiation that we experience everyday..."

But I can't.

On every front we are warned to stay away from radioactive substances...

And Americium-124 is no different. It is radioactive. (Please take note of the Project Manhattan Reference)

I would like to say here, that, Guess what?

Of course there is another option.

And a more effective one.

Typical that we don't all know that huh?

There are 2 main types of fire detectors and they have MAJOR differences in reliability....

Fast flame fires (i.e. petrochemical based fires etc) are detected by the radioactive detectors 30-90 seconds FASTER than the photoelectric type....

BUT....(Of course there is a but....I am a conspiracist....) :')

Slow burning, smouldering fires-which makes up almost 95% of reported house fires-Detect smoke 15-18 minutes EARLIER than the radioactive fire alarm....

Also according to studies 'ionising' smoke detectors, outright FAIL 20% of the time anyway......

So I am thinking everyone needs to check it out for themselves....Elimination of these accumulative poisons in our families lives is vital at this point in history...More so than any other...

Interesting Info huh? Let me know what you think!

That seems like a cool one.

But of course. Remember the Nuclear Boy Scout? The kid who tried to create a nuclear bomb in his backyard with the radioactive material he stole from neighborhood fire alarms, you don't need to remind him.

Americium 241 is an alpha emitter. Alpha particles are easily stopped by skin, paper, cloth, or even a few inches of air. If you swallow an alpha emitting material it is very bad for you, though. Just make sure that you don't open up the sealed source inside your smoke detector.

Please keep in mind that you are much more likely to be harmed by a house fire than by a tiny bit of radioactive material. You are getting a small dose of radiation from natural sources all the time anyway. The extra from a smoke detector can't even be measured.

If you really want to live a longer, healthier life, put your smoke detectors up and make sure they work. Hanging up your phone while driving, avoiding sugary drinks, and quitting smoking are also good ideas.

The radioactive source is most likely beta radiation. At distances of 5-10 cm it is harmless as it is ionised easily. The reason the label is on this alarm is to stay away from the inside of it. The beta radiation travels from the source to the detector. When there is no smoke the beta radiation hits the detector. When there is too much smoke, it interferes with the beta radiation travelling to the detector and if the number of beta radiation decreases too much the alarm goes off. Don't worry they are harmless.
