The first thing we have learned about addiction is that it is one of the oldest problems in Man's history. We begun to benefit from new approaches to the problem. Doctors today, know a great deal more about alcoholism than their predecessors knew only two generations ago. They are beginning to define the problem and study it in detail.

About Alcoholism
What we have learned about alcoholism?
While there is no formal "AA definition" of addiction/alcoholism etc, the of people I know agree that, for most of them, it could be described as a physical compulsion, coupled with a mental obsession. What they meant is that they had a distinct physical desire to consume alcohol or other substance beyond their capacity to control it, in defiance of all rules of common sense. They not only had an abnormal craving for alcohol or other intoxicating substance but we frequently yielded to it at the worst possible times. They did not know when (or how) to stop. Often they did not seem to have sense enough to know when not to begin.
