THE NEED FOR SYNERGY IN OUR HEALTH SECTOR

The Nigerian health sector haa actually had it's fair share of issues, challenges, misunderstandings and struggles over the years, and as someone who was brought up by a mother who is a nurse, I have been able to draft out a few reasons to explain why there's so much still to be done in the Nigerian health sector (this could be peculiar to most African nations too.

One of the major misdoings that has slowed down the pace of the Nigerian health sector is the over dependence and focus on only an aspect of the sector. How do I mean? You see right from the University, there is so much shared knowledge, lectures, qualifications needed to even get admitted to study Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing Science, Radiography, Dentistry, even Laboratory sciences, all of these need a basic O LEVEL pass in Mathematics, English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, but coming up to the labour market , you find out so much heterogeneity in the health sector, everyone seems to be concerned about the medical doctors, ignoring other important stakeholders in the sector.

Everyone seems to be guilty, the government, the professionals, even the common man who visits the hospitals on a daily basis, there are so much disparities, disagreement, intolerance a no among practitioners in the health sector, me thinks we need to get to a place where we discover that in our differences, there is so much similarity to behold, that everyone has something unique to bring to the table.

Today in Nigeria, there has been too much emphasis placed on a sub-group and it is leading to injustice and crisis even in the training institutions, there are more than 100 universities in Nigeria today offering Medicine, but less than 25 for nursing sciences, just about 20 doing Pharmacy(Nigerian Universities Commission Database) meanwhile medicine and nursing is a geo-profession.

They need to grow hand in hand and the government is spending colossal amount of money on Medicine, neglecting Nursing and other healthcare providers, while there is nothing to show for it as the health indices in the country is going down, it cannot be solved until we realize that for greater efficiency, everyone is important .
