Sunlight

in #health7 years ago

This might be a slightly controversial point as most people, including myself, have always been taught to avoid the sun and use lots of factor 30 sunscreen. Although I don’t advocate sitting on a beach for 12 hours a day, it is important to realize the role the sun plays in helping our bodies as well as every other living organism on this planet.

Let’s face it, without the sun, we will all die since it would get very cold and there would very quickly be no more food left to eat. Furthermore, please be aware that the rays of sun absorbed by our skin actually nuture our body.

Too little exposure to the sun leads to lack of vitamin D, which is a hormone, not a vitamin. If you are working indoors during the day, living up north as a dark skinned person and always lathering up sun tan lotion you will create a vitamin D deficiency. This could even lead to cancer.

Rates of cancer in African American people is higher up north compared to down south. If you are a fair skinned person then you will need less time in the sun in order to get the vitamin D.

The best strategy when it comes to interacting with the sun is to try to expose a large amount of your skin to the sun on a daily basis for a short period of time. If you have a darker skin you will need more time in the sun than a fair skinned individual.

Consider using astaxanthin as a natural sunscreen. Astaxanthin is an antioxidant produced by algae as a countermeasure to UV exposure and can be purchased in pill form. Please be aware that if you take astaxanthin on a daily basis it still takes several weeks before it provides additional protection.

I hope this bit of information helps! :-)
