The first reports of Jenkem's existence come from a BBC report - dating back to July 1999 - in which a reporter points out that the poor children of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, would devote themselves to pulling the gases produced by the Fermentation of shit to evade the reality of idem in which they are living. These gases are called Jenkem, which is a deformation of the word "genken" and is used to refer to a generic form of any substance similar to glue and used to fly by inhalation

In both the possibility is left open that the existence of the Jenkem is no more than an urban legend, despite the BBC report, and that there is no reliable source to certify that there are actually people drugging with fermentation.
