Tourist Pineapple Tree
This is the Hala or Screw-pine tree. It is also called the Tourist Pineapple because of its fruit that is often mistaken for a pineapple. The female tree has fruit and the male tree has flowers. The Hala tree leaves were used in old Hawaii to weave sails and can still be seen today in woven hats, mats, baskets, and other items. Today the Hala trees are found in the wild and in cultivation but they aren't as numerous as in early times. It would be a shame to lose them to greed and negligence.
