Another Tourist to Hawaii Dies in Waters of Kauai

53-year-old Evan Forsnes from Spokane Washington died dies after being pulled from Kalapaki Bay on the island of Kauai.

Another drowning death in Hawaii. This is so tragic of how many tourists have died this year in Hawaiian waters.

The big problem is that the ocean is not like swimming in a pool, or an inland bod of water. The currents, and waves, can appear out of nowhere and it is not like you can swim a few feet to get to the edge or to somewhere you can stand.

I have been in the water when people looked down and saw no bottom and they freaked out. Worse yet is when they get stung by a jellyfish, or encounter a large animal. Both of those events can cause people to panic and make wrong decisions.

The other problem is snorkeling when people suck in water through their snorkel or start cramping up after being in the water too long. People don't realize the their calves will get tired from kicking with fins and thus cramp up.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong. There have been times where I got disoriented and could not find my entry point. This is more critical when you are diving off the lava cliffs of the Big Island of Hawaii where you may not have a big beach to swim back in to. Some places I dive don't have a lot of ways to get back onto the land.

People need to be safe and not take unnecessary risks when swimming in waters that they are not familiar with.
