F**king hell mate, glad you're ok, I have never been in one of them situations before but from what I remember from watching bondi beach on tv The sea can take you out pretty fast. If your friends had not been there wow the situation could have been totally different. sorry about your back mate at least your still alive. nice photos by the way :)
Yes, they come out of nowhere. If you don't know what they look like, it is very hard to spot. Worst if you don't know about them...
The question is are you going to get back in there now this has happened to you? I think it may be like riding a bike, the quicker you do it the less you will worry about it. :)

That's a good way of looking at things. I came off my motor bike a few years ago and hurt my knee, by the time it was better I was so scared of getting back on the bike, It took me a few times going around the block before I would go on main roads again. It really scared me. The blow to the head knocked me out and when I woke up in hospital surrounded by medical staff i thought I had died or something. Lucky really
