Tuborg Harbour - exclusive harbour with a history

in #harbour6 years ago (edited)

Tuborg and Carlsberg were the biggest breweries in Denmark - and fierce competitors. The Tuborg brewery was founded right by an industrial harbour in Copenhagen. At some point Carlsberg acquired Tuborg - hence the whole harbour is actually owned by the Carlsberg group now. Around year 2000 Carlsberg decided to do something with this property asset - the old industrial harbour was made into a posh area with shopping center, office buildings, appartment buildings with luxury penthouse appartents ... and a yacht harbour.

The photo below is taken looking out from the harbour through the east entrance. The beer bottles are blinking red and green during the night.

The appartments were sold for many millions to affluent buyers, whom were pressed into also buying boat places in the harbour, for up to a million DKK just for a place for the boat! An agreement was made between Carlsberg and The Royal Danish Yacht Club (Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub - KDY), the yacht club got the responsibility for the harbour. They charge the owners for an annual fee for the service. Eventually a conflict brewed when it appeared that the contract between Carlsberg and the KDY neither specifies any upper bound on how much annual fees the KDY can charge, nor how the funds collected can be spent. The annual fee was quite high - the owners assumed both that the KDY was spending money on a good insurance and that they were putting funds into a savings fond - hence people got quite upset when the harbour was damaged in a storm and the annual fees had to be increased a lot to cover the repair costs. Anyway, I digress ... let's go for a tour in this exclusive harbour ...

Here is a view towards the harbour from the outside. Those outer breakwaters are not connected to land - meaning there are actually three entrances to the harbour. To the right there is an western entrance, I frequently saw kayaks passing through behind the breakwater without entering the harbour. To the left there is a small opening, marked as closed for boat traffic - as you may see there is some construction activity there, I guess they will fill it completely and expand the harbour.

Approx same position, approx one month later, and looking a bit further to the left. The construction work is progressing.

Even further to the left. Not much visible, but straight ahead there is a beach. To the left there is Svanemøllehavnen (harbour) and Svanemølleværket (power plant).

And the western opening in the breakwaters

I guess this is the typical kind of boats one would buy if having far too much money at hand, not knowing much about boating and suddenly owning a place to moore up a boat

To the left is the harbour restaurant. In the end of the harbour, in this direction, there is a shopping centre. That's were I went to do grocery shopping while staying in Copenhagen. From a biking/walking perspective my harbour was really far out - but taking the dhingy over to Tuborg was an easy thing

Service quay; pumps for petrol, diesel, pump-out station for the wastewater and another pump-out-station ... for oil spills?

Main entrance to the harbour office. In some harbours it's not at all clear what direction to go to find the toilet, garbage cointainer, etc - but in Tuborg it's all very well marked.

Staying guests may borrow bikes - though you will need to catch the harbour masters while the harbour office is open.

This is the restaurant. We planned eating there once (just looking at the map, "where do we find a restaurant") - but skipped, it didn't quite look like the right place for us, it looked very expensive, the customers were mostly elder people.

Here is the cheaper dining offer - bring your own food and grill it on the harbour grill. I must say, I find the harbour grill at Lynetten/Margretheholm more cosy.

There were also a playground - and according to the web pages it should be included in the price - but when I went closer, I saw a sign saying that it was strictly only for members of the KDY, so I didn't take photos of it.

I'm very unhappy that I didn't manage to get a clear shot of this bridge. This is a sideway to the right when heading towards the shoppign centre. There are signs telling that there are no guest places behind the bridge.

... in the end one can go left or right ...

... that is, one cannot really go right. It looks beautiful. I wish I had a better photo. Behind the rocks there is the sea.

This is Luna, not really the average boat. I can imagine it must be a bit difficult to more up when it's not possible to walk around on the outside of the ship.

Going in the direction of the shop. The outer part of the harbour is more than four meters deep, it's a bit more shallow here and quite much more shallow in the end.

Here it's only 1.5 metres deep, going to 1.3 metres deep if continuing. Nothing to worry about as I was with my dhingy ...

This is the end ... and the shops to the right.

Some weird architecture

Albatrossen - another not-so-average boat, it looks like an old military boat that has been turned into a private yacht.

One week later ... construction work is progressing. I wish I had taken lots of photos from the same position and angle, but at different times.

Harbour fees are relatively expensive. According to the official webpage it would currently be 300 DKK pr day for my boat. The nearby Hellerup havn is a bit cheaper, I paid DKK 130 pr day before discounts, in Margretheholm/Lynetten it's DKK 180 pr night if I remember right. I have no idea about harbour fees in Svanemøllehavnen.

I did do my laundry there; I paid 75 DKK in the automat for 24 hours of access to the washing machine. There was only one relatively small washing machine and one thumble drier, and other people also wanting to get their laundry done. On the receipt for the laundry I got an access code to toilet and shower facilities as well. It was quite good standards on the facilities.

Thanks for the tour around there.

It reminds me a bit of a cross between the Regents Canal in London (taller properties) and the Marina in Brighton (lower buildings with boats moored outside. 😊

Carlsberg is by far my favorite alcoholic beer. I drank a few from Denmark and also quite a lot from Germany and Romania also. It doesn't have the same taste in every country. I guess it's the water, but yeah my favorite. In the non-alcoholic sector I like Stella Artois because it's the closest in flavor to an alcoholic one.
Regarding the boats you snapped in the harbor I would pass on all if them, even if I would have that much millions. I saw some fast SEADOO in my area and they seem more appealing. I am not in going long distance on boat by the way and probably that's why I would prefer speed ones. The neighborhood over there looks great though.

Seems very much like a place where the other half lives...

Tuborg is as far as I know the working class beer :o) while Carlsberg is a bit for the upper class - correct me if I am wrong? same here in Czech with Pilsenr Urquell and Gambrinus...
