HappyChallenge: Harman Fortified Church

in #happychallenge6 years ago (edited)

Dear all,

Total we visited an amazing place, the Harman Fortified Church, an evangelic church build in the early 13th century, by the Teutonic Knights.

Țara Bârsei or the Burzenland (in German) is a region in the south east of Transylvania. In 1211 the region was given to the Teutonic Knights by King Andrew II of Hungary in return for guarding the southeastern border of the Kingdom of Hungary against the Cumans. The Teutonic Knights began building wood-and-earth forts in the area, while the bountiful agricultural field let to colonization by German immigrants. Few years later, the Teutons started to fortify the churches, but their relation with the powerful Hungarian Kingdom was very fast eroded. In 1255, defeated by the Hungarians, the Teutonic Knights had to leave Transylvania and leave behind all fortified churches and lands.

Harman is one of the most preserved fortified churches built by the Teutonic Knights in Transylvania, a wonderful place to teach the kids a lesson of our history.

Here some of the pictures that I took today:
