I agree with pretty much all your take on the subject, and would like to add one thing.
As some one seeing 'hands on', (so to speak), how sadism/masochism easily becomes a sexualized topic, for certain individuals, I have also seen how by expressing their sadism/ masochism in a 'safe' sexual forum, it 'allows' them to function with a 'healthily' outside, in the real world.

Something they they would not be able to do without this sexual avenue of release.

I am neither advocating, or criticizing this behavior - it is just an observation I have made over the years -talking to hundreds of people about this subject, who possess these characteristics.
