HAIR TALK: HOW TO PICK A GOOD SALON FOR 4C, COILY, CURLY or KINKY HAIR

in #hair7 years ago (edited)

I have not been to the salon for about a year. I straighten, twist out and even do my braids myself. However, there comes a time when you need that special attention or a style that you cannot do on your hair. I stopped going to the salon when I discovered that 4c hair breaks easily when we snag and pul on it. To retain length, I wash, condition, detangle and do everything myself. However, this week I need to straighten my hair and I need a small trim and I feel like going to the salon. The lady who does my hair is pregnant and I have to choose another place because she hasnt opened her salon. However, I am not worried because I have some tips in handy.

Salons are places where people go to get their hair done by professionals. The appearance of the hair determines how a person’s overall appearance is. Traditionally, the salon was a place for women and girls but over the years, men also frequent the salon to get their hair done. The salon is a multifunctional place that caters for many needs. Most salons have a nail section where people can get manicures and pedicures. Some salons also have facial and massage treatments but essentially they cater for the hair. A visit to the salon ought to be fulfilling and a person should get the best treatment for their hair. Picking the wrong salon will leave a person dissatisfied. There are a few pointers that people need to know when they are looking for a salon. These are price, organization of the salon, professionalism of the staff, equipment, results and client-stylist relationship.

Price

One of the main points is that a salon should be affordable for the client. There are different salons which cater for different people in the society. People should make sure that they go to the salon that is in their price range. This will avoid people overspending or underspending. Most people will feel comfortable in an affordable salon because he/she will feel value for the money paid. Expensive salons have more quality facilities or they cater for upper class clientelle. A person should always ask for a pricelist before the stylists embark on the service. This will avoid surprises.

Cleanliness

An individual should pick a place that is tidy. Organization goes a long way to show what kind of work the professionals will do. If a person walks into an untidy space and seeks services, it is obvious that the stylist will do a slapdash job. A neat place shows that the workers are professional and devoted to their jobs. This devotion translates to the work that they do. The salon space speaks volumes and a person should always chose a cozy, clean, neat and relaxed environment for the services.

Professionalism

Thirdly, the staff should be professional. The staff should greet the clients and explain to them what services they have. The professionals should be well dressed and their hair should also be great. A person should not be working in a salon if their hair is bad because they are the people advertising the service. If the employees are friendly and professional, this is none hint that they will treat the clients with respect and do a good job. If the personnel are talking slang and cursing, there is a high percentage likelihood that they will be careless when rendering the service to the client.

Equipment and tools

A person should take a survey of the equipment to make sure that they are using great equipment. Another way is to observe the quality of people’s hair as they walk out of the salon. One should look at the customers in the seats and see what is happening. If there are customer complaints or bad hair, that is a red flag. People should not ignore the red flags when they are searching for a salon because people demand the best service for their hair. Red flags are warnings that show that a person should probably move the search elsewhere.

Products

Also scan the products that they are using and for the first time carry your own just in case.

Referrals

Individuals ought to rely word of mouth. If a lady spots someone with impeccable hair in the streets or the office, they can kindly ask them to tell them where they got their hair done. A person ought to also research on the best hair salons in the area on the internet. For example, a quick search on ‘the best hair Salons in Nairobi’ will bring a list of salons to try.

Client-Stylist Relationship

The last pointer that a person needs to adhere to is the client stylist relationship. Most people say that they enjoy the service on their hair if there is a relationship between them and their stylist. A good relationship ensures that the client can talk freely with the stylist without fear or tension between the two of them. The success of the experience is subjective because it depends on a variety of factors. It also depends on whether the client got the satisfaction that he/she desired from the visit to the salon in the first place. A client stylist relationship is complex and people go to the salons because they want someone who will understand the exact service and hairstyle that they need. They prefer someone who will listen to them. Remember to tell them how you like your hair handled. If you hair is kinky or 4c, tell them to take their time to detangle or do it at home. Go to the details to avoid disappointments and shedding, rough combing, snagging and pulling of your hair.

Conclusion

The salon is one of the places where women and men visit regularly. One way to looking good is having the hair in check. People have a hard time while they are looking for a salon that will understand and cater for their needs. There are few things that a person needs to look for when he/she is looking for a salon. These are price, organization of the salon, professionalism of the staff, equipment, results and client stylist relationship.

Beautiful hair you got right there

This is very good advice. Like you I do my hair most of the times. Currently rocking a protective style and I would say it is a welcome break. I always carry my products to the salon. It doesn't matter if they have their own. I am carrying mine.

Exactly, one can get the shock of their life in salons when you realise that half of your hair is in the comb.
