In esoteric Christianity there is also the understanding that the dreams around New Year's day are very significant (the 12 Holy Nights). Didn't know there was an equivalent notion in Japan. Makes logical sense, of course, processing the year, looking ahead: it all intensifies the activity in the brain and makes new collages with familiar images; but dream-interpreting Freud-style has spoiled much of its poetry and magic meaning. I hope to dream of an aubergine soon.
