Yes Your Face Can Be Hacked From Facebook
The tech world has made much ado about facial recognition technology. The facial recognition industry has been used for everything from home security to computer logins. In a world where you are hearing stories of hackers breaking into everything from political campaigns to the NSA, I guess we should not be surprised that even your face may be hacked.
The vulnerabilities of facial recognition security and technology were featured at a recent Usenix security conference. In this demonstration, photos which were available to anyone on Facebook were subjected to a simple 3-D rendering process in order to replicate a person’s face. For those of you that may think 3D rendering is a sophisticated process, it is not. You can even get a near perfect 3D rendering done on fiverr in mere hours.
Not surprisingly, the 3D renderings were able to fool even some of the most advanced facial recognition security systems. By using a virtual reality based system to depict the 3D renderings, researchers were able to gain access to what was supposed to be fool proof facial recognition protected properties.
The available facial biometric data openly displayed across social media sites has made this “hacking of your face” even easier. One wonders if we will see the day where the security risk of posting your pictures on Facebook is just too great and once again social media will change forever.
Good article keeping us abreast of rapidly rising new technologies that will affect us all. It's important to know what's coming our way!
