How come I get the feeling it's the wrong fingers bleeding? Shouldn't an electric guitar be played with one of these?:

Whenever I tried learning to play guitar (I still suck) it's not the fingers of the picking hand that hurt more.
I've definitely managed to get some blood on my bass when I've played, some shows just get more extreme, but it's never been this much.
