What you learn in and out of school is what we called knowledge. Knowledge consist of information or instruction stored in the brain. Learning can be active, intentional and orderly. Or passive, accidental and without direction. We all learn from everyday experiences in a passive, informal and accidental way. Some of those we learn are pleasant, unpleasant, some are true and some are not. We also learn from what our parents and other older people but not all that they pass on to us is true. We then use reason to evaluate what is transferred to us as knowledge and decided whether to accept it or not. This is the problem with informal learning in the world at large. We are the assessors and recipients of the knowledge that our own experiences tell us. That is why man is said to be both the victim and the creator of his own circumstances. He does things out of personal and inner motivation and then by his actions and reactions, leads others to accept the factuality or falsehood of what he does, depending on his personality make-up.But the active, intentional orderly and meaningful learning happens only in a formal school setting or environment. Here is where you decide to learn. Here is where you study because you give the required time, effort and attention needed in order to obtain proven knowledge. And when that knowledge is transferred from someone who has it to you who lack and want it, a condition results known as education.

You must, then study in order to earn and education. But merely studying as an ordinary student is no longer good enough. Standards of education keep going up everywhere in the world and you have to cope, we all have to cope. More and more requirements are being made: new information and technology introduced, former information modified, new questions raised and new answers made to old questions. Every day, something new happens. It is said that the world’s development rate is one invention or discovery every minute or two, and it is bound to go faster. The unprecedented knowledge explosion in the world continues to bloat and everyone must paddle on his own to catch up with the requirements of globalization. You, in your small corner, with your simple motivation must paddle and paddle well. Development will never go back or wait for you just because you have certain abilities, shortages or personal problems. Formal and optimum learning is no longer a privilege. It is a basic, a given in this ever-changing, highly competitive world. And you are making only first steps. Your knowledge can never be complete in this world. You will always need to learn something new as you go on living. You, like everyone else, are – in every sense – always a student.
