Gridcoin & Boinc & Odroid - Profitability Update
It has been quite a while since I posted about my Odroid Setup for Boinc + Gridcoin (see Part1 and Part2). Most of the variables for calculating its profitability have changed a lot in the meantime, so I decided to update it all. I was pleasantly surprised to find out, that this setup is now profitable even with Germany's high electricity costs.
So let's have a look at some numbers.
Fixed Values:
- Power Consumption: 13.5W (0.0135kWh)
- Price kWh: 24.61 Cent/kWh (Germany..)
- Cost/Day: 0.0797€

As you can see a lot of the data changed. While RAC stayed roughly the same, MAG dropped quite a bit (9.73 to 3.96). The Mag_Unit increased slightly, but this still leaves us with a drop in daily GRC (1.946 to 0.857). The biggest change is the huge increase in BTC-Price though ($3,745 to $16,861). During all of that Gridcoin managed to stay around 900 Satoshis in the GRC/BTC trading pair, which means GRC value increased heavily.
The daily earnings have doubled since last september and this setup currently runs with a daily profit of 3.21 Cents (€). I know that this setup is kind of special, but this increase can also be applied to all other setups (including regular desktop machines). This means, that Gridcoin allows more and more users to run BOINC and contribute to scientific research without making a loss. In fact in most countries with lower electicity costs most setups are already profitable.
And please don't get me wrong. I am not excited about making 3.21 Cents a day, I am excited that this means there is no longer a negative financial aspect in contributing to scientific research through BOINC!
