Teams within Gridcoin

in #gridcoin6 years ago

I have been around #Gridcoin for a long time, and its been a really nice experience. The perennial pain and probably one of the most contentious issues that gets our otherwise beautiful community riled up is the issue of BOINC teams.

To earn Gridcoin you must join BOINC team Gridcoin, its pretty central in the way the coin operates (so Im told) and its not simple to remove without unintended consequences (not that I properly understand them, but I can take it on faith). For me this was a non-issue, I didnt really want to be in a BOINC team before Gridcoin, but for some people they invested a huge amount of time and effort in team building and their statistics are a point of pride; in this sense its pride in helping humanity so thats quite reasonable. So this clearly limits the appeal of Gridcoin, if some of the most hardcore BOINCers are torn between rewards and team loyalty, and most joined for altruistic reasons, generally the team loyalty will win out.

So if we have the problem of not being able to remove the Gridcoin team membership in any short-medium time frame, then the next logical option is to create sub-teams within Gridcoin.
The block-chain can be looked at as a kind of database with certain pre-defined data fields; Block Number, Block Hash, Transaction Hash etc.

The Nureal Network is where all the CPIDs and specific project RAC data is assembled and it seems to a dope like me simply adding one more column "Team", make it 40 character free text entry, and leave it up to users to create teams within Gridcoin?

Now your team data isnt held within a bunch of 3rd party websites with centralized points of failure, your team stats can be held in the immutable, DDoS resistant globally free block-chain. Want to know your team stats, see it easily with a block explorer. Stats sites line BOINCstats can just integrate with the explorer and combine the new dataset with the history, just at significantly lower future storage costs. I actually think bringing the power to block-chain to BOINC credit statistics is a way to add value to the entire BOINC project, help people feel that they can retain their team pride and spread the benefits of people offsetting their energy bills.

Im certain I dont have a complete answer here, but I just thought Id throw it out, even if its been suggested and discounted before.

Thanks for reading.

Looks like a nice idea. But overall the community has always decided that gridcoin should be a service, a reward and not a platform. While the idea is great I Don't see it becoming accepted easily. Besides it implementation would be far from trivial

I think the first step toward this would be removing the team requirement altogether, but keeping the stats management with BOINC. Then we slowly look to integrating more information into the Data Storage Network as more and better blockchain scaling solutions are developed. I think that giving users the ability to add data to the DSN at the point of host might cause a few issues -- solvable issues but issues nonetheless.

I think Dynamic Witness Participation and either of the SSA proposals combined with beacon minting will present the opportunity to remove the team requirement.
