Computing for Clean Water Project Research Paper Released

in #gridcoin6 years ago

Gridcoin Research is a Proof-of-Stake cryptocurrency that rewards research done on the distributed BOINC platform. Today, 26 projects can be attached and gain rewards for work, where World Community Grid is one of them.

Computing for Sustainable Water

Water is one of the most abundant resources on Earth, yet more than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean and safe water. Managing freshwater resources in one crucial, often overlooked or neglected problem today.

World Community Grid is an umbrella project, sponsored by IBM, and has a variation of projects running at the same time for users to choose. Computing for Sustainable Water was one of their previous projects, now completed since 2012, and generated results that still comes to use.

Project Background

It all started in 2009 when President Barack Obama signed an executive order for making the Chesapeake Bay a national treasure and thereby calls for restoring and preserving the nation’s largest estuary and its watershed. The project was started to study the effects of, current, potential management practices of human activity around water sources.

A model game was built up, incorporating natural elements and human activity using game players representing crop farmers, land developers, watermen, and assorted regulators. With the vast resources of World Community Grid, the project performed millions of simulations to understand the effects on nature better. With a hope to apply their findings to other regions in the world which face similar problems as the Chesapeake Bay.

Recent Publication of Results

The project's findings were that many of the most common practices had little effect on the water quality.

It is not that these practices do not have intrinsic value; rather, it is a matter of the degree of their effect. As a result, we have made these results known to policy-makers at the US Federal level, as well as at state and local levels.

Recently these results have been posted, yet unpublished, in a paper of the project's findings that is available on their webpage for everyone to read.

Other researchers can read on how to request any available data on their research in another paper.

Join Gridcoin Research+BOINC and Change the World

BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, pronounced /bɔɪŋk/ – rhymes with "oink") is a distributed work platform that has been around since 2002 (15 years now) and rewards all participants with a score. BOINC consists of over 500,000+ active users and many more computers. It is a popular platform for researchers to do large amounts of distributed work. The infrastructure is already in place, and no payment is required. Doing distributed work is purely voluntary, where users can attach any project of their choosing.

Gridcoin Research is a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) cryptocurrency that rewards Proof-of-Research (PoR) for BOINC computation based on the BOINC RAC (Recent Average Credit) score. Some requirements are for projects to be listed on the platform but are relatively easy to comply. There are currently ~20+ Projects included that the network rewards work done by users.

You should prepare something like this to be sent out as a press release. Best way to promote science, BOINC and Gridcoin, IMO.

I don't really understand what you wish such thing to be done. This post is sourced by information from the projects official press release. They aren't affiliated with Gridcoin itself nor are Gridcoin with them.

The two benefit from each other though, in a natural symbiosis I would say 😎

Thanks, glad you liked it

everybody need fress water...☺

They do indeed

@sc-steemit this is a nice project that people will be proud to be part of.

Outstanding post and Informative . Thank you for sharing!

You should mention that the project (for crunchers) is retired, but that there are many more.

Well, I think that's what I've done. I mention that there are, today, 26 projects that can be attached. I later in the post specifically mention that this project has been completed since 2012.

This post is about an old project that still makes contribution by the results. It's all about how past projects can benefit today even after so many years since the last distribute result.

I also end the post with information about both Boinc and Gridcoin.

This is awesome. So the project ended in 2012 and is still getting results? That is awesome. You post some of the coolest stuff. Thanks!

The results that came from their distribute project is still helpful for others, so yes it's still most active.
