Milkyway@home - RAC output optimisation for CPUs

in #gridcoin7 years ago (edited)

Most people know MilkyWay@home as BOINC project for GPUs but what if you still want to contribute to this project and only have a system with CPU? Is it possible to optimise the output?

This afternoon I was checking the credits provided to systems with CPUs on MilkyWay@home and to my surprise I found substantial differences between the applications available.

There are two applications available, both supporting CPUs: MilkyWay@Home and MilkyWay@Home N-Body Simulation.

After analysing a range of hosts, I noticed that you can achieve a RAC output between 2.5 to 7 times higher with MilkyWay@home as compared to MilkWay@home N-Body Simulation (depending on the host).

Using this link, you need to set the applications as indicated below.

It is very easy to implement so enjoy the output increase and keep on crunching!

Gridcoin is an open source cryptocurrency (Ticker: GRC) which securely rewards volunteer computing performed upon the BOINC platform in a decentralized manner on top of proof of stake.

BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is a distributed Internet platform and was launched beginning of 2002 and it rewards participants with credits for performed work. BOINC is an application available for multiple Operating Systems and uses the unused CPU and GPU cycles on computers to perform scientific work.
