RE: Gridcoin GPU mining - Heating Up Your Living Room with Computational Science

Hi @vortac , impressive machine you got there... Its not only the 7970 that are perfectly up for the double precision FP64 job. All the Tahiti Chips have extraordinary power on this field of calculations, even the Tahiti LE that has been used in the 7870 XT cards. It is a bit slower tough but still very far ahead from a lot of more recent cards.
7870 ->748.8 GFlops
7970 -> 947.2 GFlops
as a comparison : the normal 7870 GHz Edition with the Pitcairn Chip has 160 ..
So all you out there if you got an old graphics card with a Tahiti Chipset or even a New Zealand one (7990) get them out and crunch Milkyway :)

Heh, 7870 XT was a mid-range GPU even then. It's funny to see it outperforming modern GPUs today, even if it's only FP64 performance that is superior.

Yeah well it was the upper end of the midrange but you're absolutely right. It's not only funny it's also someway creepy If you see all those nice shiny monsters of graphic cards and in fp64 they only see the back of quite old cards.
On the other side those old beasts soak power like hell :) I don't know exactly about the 7970s but I guess they are also quite hungry ;)

Reference 7970s have very well implemented and fully unlocked digital voltage control. One can undervolt/downclock for maximum power efficiency or overvolt/overclock for maximum performance.
