Gridcoin -- the "better" cryptocurrency mining alternative -- (English/German)
What is Gridcoin ?
Gridcoin is a cryptocurrency that rewards you for donating your computational power to scientific projects from all over the world.
Currently, Gridcoin is placed on Rank 233 on coinmarketcap, the market capitalization is $37.014.022 US Dollars.
Gridcoin has seen a boost in price recently and is traded at $0,094 US Dollars today(2017/12/28).
Just to be complete, the Gricoin Blockchain is a PoS (Proof of Stake) chain with additional reward features.
What is so special about Gridcoin?
As already mentioned in the short description above, Gridcoin rewards donating computational power to scientific projects, i.e. this means that while you are watching videos or surfing the internet, a part of your computer could calculate scientific data for specific projects. Since modern computers are quite fast this can work without interfering and you won't even notice a difference.
With the current boost in price, you can even be earning money by this, depending on the price you are paying for your electricity.
You don't need to calculate useless hashes for earning a cryptocurrency!
You can support brilliant scientific causes for humanity and get rewarded with Gridcoin!
How is that possible?
This all is made possible by a software called BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) developed by Berkeley University and used as a basis for a lot of projects in need for computational power.
The first project using this was SETI@home (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), which has been using the computers of other internet users to help search in radio signals for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence.
Since then a lot of other projects on the edge of science startet using BOINC and are able to get faster results for their calculations.

In the following list are some of the most known ones:
- SETI@Home, searching for extra terrestrial intelligence
- Rosetta@home, researching proteine structures and trying to find cures for some major human diseases
- Einstein@home, searching for new Pulsars
- Milkyway@home, creating a 3D Map of the near Universe
- WorldCommunityGrid, which is combined by a lot of projects like FightAIDS@home, Smash Childhood Cancer, fight Tuberculosis, research better materials for solar panels.

Was ist so speziell an Gridcoin?
Wie oben schon kurz erwähnt, belohnt Gridcoin diejenigen unter uns die ihre Rechenkraft and wissenschaftliche Projekte verleihen. Das heisst, während ihr zum Beispiel Videos schaut oder im Netz surft, könnten andere Teile der CPU Datenpakete zur besseren Bekämpfung von AIDS berechnen.
Da moderne Computer wahre Rechenkünstler sind, kann das alles im Hintergrund ablaufen ohne euch zu stören.
Mit dem letzten Steigen des Preises von Gridcoin könnt ihr eventuell sogar ein bisschen Geld verdienen (zusätzlich zu dem Bezahlen der Stromkosten), wobei das stark von den Stromkosten und der Effektivität der eingesetzten Hardware abhängt.
Ihr müsst nicht nutzloses Hashes ausrechnen um eine Kryptowährung zu bekommen!
Bei Gridcoin verwendet ihr eure Rechnenpower zum Wohl der Menschheit und bekommt zusätzlich Gridcoins!
Wie geht das?
Das alles wird durch eine spezielle Software genannt Boinc (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) ermöglicht. Diese wurde von der Universität Berkeley entwickelt und dient inzwischen als Basis für viele Projekte.
Das erste Projekt war SETI@home (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) im Mai 1999, innerhalb dieses Projektes werden die angeschlossenen Computer dafür benutzt Radiosignale nach Auffälligkeiten zu durchsuchen um möglicherweise Anzeichen für die Existenz außerirdischen Lebens zu finden.
Seitdem sind eine Menge weiterer Projekte, am Rande der bekannten Wissenschaften, hinzugekommen!

Ich hab Gridcoin und Boinc letzte Woche getestet, aber bin zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass es sich als PoW Konzept nicht groß von anderen Mining-Coins unterscheidet. Auch wenn es für einen guten Zweck ist, in Bezug auf den ROI für verbrauchten Strom und Prozessorleistung, ist es nicht profitabler als normales Mining. Ich bin halt eher ein Fan von "Proof of Brain" (wie hier auf Steemit) oder dem Vermieten von Speicher bzw. Bandbreite (wie Substratum, Storj etc) - da kann jeder mitmachen und braucht keine Mining-Rigs, mit enormer Investition bzw. Stromkosten einer Kleinstadt. ;)
Just to clarify, we don't use DPoR anymore, though there is a poll up that suggests we might look into redesigning the protocol in 2018!
In short, Gridcoin is a Proof of Stake blockchain that uses a secondary incentive structure to mint Gridcoin based on an individual's contribution to BOINC.

Hast du schon einmal getestet wieviel Coins du unter Vollast / Halblast / Minimal pro Tag oder Woche so generieren kannst? Hört sich interessant an.
das kommt drauf an mit welchem Rechner ich das tue :) und ob das nur ne CPU ist oder auch ne GPU zum Einsatz kommt

Gridcoin sounds like a good one, especially with a low market cap like that! I like projects that use the 'useless PoW' to actually do something useful!
It's why I have some Golem (GNT) for example.
However I don't keep up with the 'supercomputer blockchain' field too much. Aren't there a lot of competitors by now? I heard something about SONM and Elastos too, but I never looked into it yet. I always get a bit wary when more competitors arrive on the scene.. suddenly it's a lot less clear which will survive and which won't.
Unfortunately, Golem is a bad example of avoiding useless PoW as it is basically Ethereum at heart, which is PoW. It's also a highly broken project out of the gate, but has great marketing.:)
Gridcoin is based on a large pre-existing system called BOINC which many people have been contributing CPU time to even before there were any monetary rewards.
Only around 1% of BOINC users are currently mining Gridcoins, leaving huge potential for growth without converting anyone to anything. Seems clear to me which will win!
Oh, yes, if that's the one that's been around for ages, I may have participated by doing DNA and Cancer research at some point in the past, running it as a screensaver.
The only downside really is that they're doing it for free to create a better world, which is a great thing when you think about it! Monetizing that, kind of takes away the 'I do this for free!' part.
Not sure if that's bad because I'm all for rewarding people who try to improve the world, but it does take away the voluntary-spirit and replaces it with a monetary incentive. Hopefully it pays off and the network grows, but I wonder if there won't always be a group that will continue to do it for free just like they don't want money for it right now
You could donate the earned gridcoin back into the projects, I think some are taking GRC to help support server costs etc. SETI for example will take it.
Hmm... that's true, you could of course still do it for free. And in fact produce near-tangible value in the form of a token. Smart thinking!
