Gridcoin Wallet v3.5.9.9 Clean Install Crash - FIX INSIDEsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #gridcoin7 years ago (edited)

There have been reports of the Gridcoin wallet failing to boot when running from a clean install on version v3.5.9.9. The issues have been traced back to the installer not generating a configuration file for the wallet. A new release to patch this is being worked on right now, but if you want to get your wallet running before the next release here are the steps to generate your own config file:

  • Install the Gridcoin wallet as usual. It will fail to boot.

  • Navigate to %appdata%/GridcoinResearch

  • Add a new text file, open it, and add the following. Note there are three fields you will need to fill out manually.

  • Save the file. Ensure that file extensions are visible and then change the name of your text file to 'gridcoinresearch.conf' without the quotes.

You can also generate your own, more advanced, config file using the instructions and explanations available on the Gridcoin Wiki.

This bug does not affect your balance, mining payout, or existing wallet clients in any way. Existing users can safely upgrade their clients to v3.5.9.9.

In the latest versions the boincappdir and boincdatadir should no longer be required. The boincdatadir is now detected from the Windows registry.

I have bumped you to the top so any future visitors see your addition.

Is 'cpumining=true' really necessary? I thought this command is without a function?

It is not necessary - I just copied out a config file I had on my machine at the time to provide a fix ASAP. I have removed the line.

Great guide, thanks for taking the time to write this up.

Out of Sync

That's the key part. If you give the wallet some time, it should sync back up. Alternatively, a restart of the wallet will fix it as well by forcing the sync to start if it does not do so on its own.

Yes, waited to sync, did also several restarts...

The only problem i had with this update was a runtime kernel error, figured out after a couple days that i had a corrupted block file and needed a resync,

And do i need all those addnodes or are they just for a really good connection? [I have 3 and connection is pretty good]

The reason you would have not noticed any problems when updating, is that your client already had a config file. The config file failed to generate on a clean install.

Regarding the nodes, the client will only connect to a maximum of 8 by default. This is essentially extreme redundancy. However, seeing as the above instructions to make a config file are just a simple copy-past, I was not too worried about having all the nodes listed. The main motivation was to not be partial to a specific set of nodes.

True, its good to have back ups :)
