Why The Pool Will Not Reward Or Pay You and What are Orphaned Projects/Host

How To Obtain Maximum Pool Payouts

Hello Gridsters.

As usual, I want to document and at the same time share some of my mistakes as I pool mine to gather enough GRC in preparation for better reward by the time I return to solo mining and staking my coins.

Mistake 1 - Ophaned Host/Task

A new custom rom/firmware (Android) came out for my mobile phone and I flashed it. My phone's "unique ID" and all changed. The Pool could not marry the "Old and new ID" and created a new "Host Name and CPID" then "orphaned" the old host record.

https://www.grcpool.com/account/orphans

Orphans are projects which are no longer linked to your account and are unable to be paid out under normal circumstances. These instances possibly occur from host/project deletion, OS resinstalls, or other odd technical reasons within the BOINC network where your project gets new ids from BOINC

Solution : I "backup apps and data" using Titanium Backup app and restored them with the old IDs

I believe this will also happen if you format your computers because they will also lose their unique IDs too and become orphaned.

Mistake 2 - Project selection

I started as a solo miner but when I decided to join the pool, I wanted to continue mining those projects I mined solo. I at the same time registered for new projects on project's websites and did not select them from the pool's website.

Correction :

Only projects added and removed from Within the pool's website are recognized and rewarded accordingly.

The pool registers for projects and join the necessary teams on behalf of the pool members. Your personal CPID as a solo miner has nothing to do with the pool.

You can add projects of interest not on pool's project list from within your Boinc Manager but the pool will not be aware of you crunching/mining those projects and will not reward you for any of such works done.

Additional Information

WHITE-LIST

Be sure that the projects you decide to work on are on the "white-list", some projects are dropped or added when a new "Super Block" (SB) is mined. Task done on such dropped projects (not on the white-list) will not be rewarded and may be rewarded when re-added by another SB.

The SB updates the Neural Network/blockchain with information about new CPIDs (New Users/Hosts), new Projects voted in or out etc. Yes there's a voting system to add or remove projects among other reasons.

HARDWARE

Be smart about the projects you select for mining. Except you are doing it for science and humanity and not for the reward or GRC, then don't use the wrong hardware for the wrong project. Make sure you are not using your ARM (Mobile), Celeron or old Pentium Processors for projects that have ATI or Nvidia (GPU) icon.

Visit http://wiki.gridcoin.us/Current_BOINC_Whitelist and http://gridcoin.us/Guides/whitelist.htm

You can also maximize your magnitude by finding projects that have smaller team RAC (just make sure they have work available) on the network report which you can find here: http://www.gridresearchcorp.com/gridcoin/?result&t=Whitelisted_Project_Leaderboard

Thank you for your time and happy crunching.

"Why The Pool Will Not Reward Or Pay You" in the title sounds a bit alarming, don't you think? An article titled somewhat like "How To Obtain Maximum Pool Payouts" would surely yield more upvotes and views, a positive upbeat is always engaging :)

Thank you for your inputs and swift support to the Gridcoin community at large and as always, your suggestions are highly cherished.

I will add and maybe modify as suggested but I sincerely felt the subject matter needs people's attention.
A subtle heading might not attract the right audience and people not wanting to lose reward or waste efforts will want to read.

As the content truly conveyed, the pool not aware of projects you are crunching which isn't on the pool's list and not added from the pool's website but added directly from the project's website will result in you not been paid. I don't think I need to sugar coat it and miss the target audience.

Thank you.

Thanks for your comment, I will summarize and use the link. I hope the developers and the pool managers will read and respond/react accordingly.

Worth knowing for pool miners, just another reason to go solo...

Thanks for your comment. Like @cm-steem rightly said, I will try to get across and I also hope they will read and take action.

Wish I had known that some time ago...
