Proposal: Gridcoin team candidacy for EOS Block Producer

in #gridcoin6 years ago (edited)

Hey Guys,

I'm sure EOS is something that jump out of fridge for everyone who follows crypto world. It's promising technology, and the race has already began.

Being a block producer not only get us deeply involved into EOS and position on center place to promote our project, but also allows us to take the benefits of staying up to date with latest crypto developments. Who knows? If EOS becomes a distributed decentralized OS, it opens a possibility for presenting Gridcoin as DApp.

Another thing, is that candidates team are usually regional groups. We have international members with depth knowledge of technology and could be relatively easy to form a scalable network, highly professionally maintained, and a chance to get a privileged spot.

If this initial discussion passes, I am willing to provide industry grade servers (bare metal) at multiple, high bandwidth location for the purpose of this project, as well as carrier grade management and monitoring software licenses / ESXi Enterprise, PRTG, among others as well at least one full time engineer to support it.

I suggest to take this proposal into consideration and lead some debate.

Also, since it could be hard to get 100% of team to agree over any off-topics that are indirectly connected to GRC, this could also be in a form of free participation to anyone who is interested. Looking forward for opinions.

I think that having an official steemit witnesses went well, why not jump into something more serious?

Sort:

EOS is new to me, but I'm happy to follow along with the idea for now. Maybe more knowledgeable people here can lead the discussion.

What do you mean by being a block producer? Sorry if I'm missing some background here.

Block producers on EOS are very similar / almost identical as Witnesses on Steemit. They will be the core of EOS platform, since block production will directly depend on them. Although it takes larger effort both from technological and human factor perspective to get into the race for block production on EOS / compared to Steemit, this could be an ideal place to position ourself if we plan to offer Gridcoin Wallet as DApp one day. (Dapp would be EOS based apps that runs on top of the blockchain platform, similar to what we know today as webapps.) If EOS - the largest ICO ever happened succeed, we can expect strong impact on future development and wide adoption of this technology. EOS is lead by Dan Larimer, same guy who founded and constructed Steemit and BitShares. It's very promising technology that could easy transform web as we know it today. - At least based on previous success of Dan. Roughly, you can think of EOS as the new generation of decentralized, blockchain based Operating System. Block Producers are center authority making it all work, just like witnesses do on Steemit.

Also, I posted this to see if there's general interest. If it happens that we have, I will definitely prepare more precise informations on next steps.

I would jump into this anyway by myself, unless there is a will from community that we do it jointly. If we decide to do it, rather then doing by myself, i'll put the resources at the service of Gridcoin team. Chances to get it successfully are lot better if we do it jointly.

Thanks for the explanation. That sounds pretty cool -- I'll do some more reading about it on my own.

" industry grade servers (bare metal) at multiple, high bandwidth location for the purpose of this project, as well as carrier grade management and monitoring software licenses / ESXi Enterprise, PRTG, among others as well at least one full time engineer to support it. " so since shit vps's let alone shit dedicated servers from providers like server4you.com are not on that level and rackspace.com let alone direct from say level3 or someone are hundreds of dollars a month plus commit bandwidth prices , what do you get out of it? You want to drop apparently hundreds let alone possibly thousands ( sorry I have racks in 5 local data centers here in Seattle and am retired from the industry working in data centers I know the costs and that is before licensing to anything you mentioned let alone what ever is needed that you do not know or have not listed yet ) so what do you get out of it? Gridcoin becomes some Amazon echo IOT device yeah!!!

The rewards for block producers are also huge. Like, excessive to the point that it has became one of the biggest criticism i have for them.

I would agree with that - these are huge. But on the other side, many of them will quickly be out of the production as there's no way to follow up without not only thousands of dollars of investment, but also mission critical industry 'know how'. Many of them don't have, and these who want to stay in the ring will need to pay significant amounts out of these rewards to consulting companies. I think the whole businesses are going to form around this. The only danger I could see is the monopoly, just like on Steemit, these where my criticism goes.

It depends. In the case of steemit it isnt like it matters much, because, lets be honest, its a clear ponzi as it is right now and constantly bleeds money out of its ecosystem by default, what with delegation bots, stupid promoted posts, haejin shenaninagans ... It really needs an overhaul if they want to make me feel confortable with letting a non-trivial amount of money sitting here.

While I would agree with you about the problem of ecosystem, I would not go that far to call it a ponzi. By the book, it can't be as long there is at least some percentage of quality content produced having some "market" value outside the closed ecosystem that could be represented in fiat, therefore, there is a production mechanism to deliver "Surplus Value" (We need to put Marxist theory into play here due to anarchistic setup of the ecosystem). Is it overvalued - I would say yes (at the levels you are talking about), but if you analyze overall quality of newcomers content that earns 1SBD at max, I would say that would be far bellow the real market value (the price of the appropriate quality content you would buy from content writers). Since significant number of people do engage in creating content (a product) at the entry level of ecosystem, I would say there is a healthy potential of correction of the platform. Where it starts to look like a ponzi, is devaluation of entry level to support unjustified earning on top levels. In typical ponzi, surplus value is never produced, rather pumped externally. This would be more a representation of neoliberal capitalism combined with Anarcho-capitalism in small. While the system will crush itself unless the problems you mentioned are solved, at one point it would become crucial to solve to protect the investment by these who made most of profit. Since the modern society is living by the very similar principles of economy at the current development stage - it's hard to predict what would happen. We never had a microsystem based on combination of Anarcho-capitalism, Neoliberal capitalism, and certain types of Communism, governed by the Anarchy and direct democracy with corporate capitalism a-like "share weight" type of voting and some surplus value (content) produced that has it's fiat backed value :)

I would not go into predicting an outcome of that spaghetti :) It would be much harder then predicting world economy trends on the long run.

But one is for sure - every economy that implements even small portion of Anarchistic or Communistic principles, require high level of consciousness. I very doubt we are at that stage yet, and as a result we see the negative phenomenas you mentioned, and therefore are Utopian. Still, it's not as simple as ponzi.

I find two very big problems to what you just said.

Steemit posts, basically, art, has no intrinsic value to it, and unlike art, you can't buy a internet post (i mean, you can, but ... : https://www.recode.net/2014/8/2/11629454/this-post-is-art-framed-4chan-post-sells-for-90900-on-ebay) . And i think that you mentioning communism, which is famed to "only work in the books" proves that there should be not too much trust to be put in steemit (as it is) . I mean, one of those days communism may work and wouldn't it be great, but at the moment we are stuck in a "So we try communism again and it fails, but it doesn't matter it was not real communism anyway" .

I don't like debating politics, convincing anyone it's so difficult that its funnier to stick with dirtbag centrism just to fish a reaction.

Literally all i would need to be able to trust steemit would be ads partnerships . Even if they can be disabled, and the possibility of promoting posts by burning steem, (no selling, no increase of reward, that steem is gone forever from the network)
