To those of you crunching this project, here is a thread about the SSL status.
Comment there and/or like also, so it gets larger attention:

It turns out that since Universe@Home is hosted in Poland, they cannot 'import' SSL encryption by law:

"Import of cryptography is regulated as well, through a 1993 law; a general authorization or import certificate is required to buy encryption products abroad.

The end-user must detail the kind of information to be encrypted and where the cryptography is to be installed.

Legitimate businesses will be helped with their application. There is no need for declaration for crypto software exported from abroad under the Wassenaar General Software Note."

What was that about state sponsored MITM attacks again? lol!

EDIT:
It looks like they will be applying for SSL, but they need to wait for funding. They do not accept donations. http://universeathome.pl/universe/forum_thread.php?id=164&postid=1496
