Gridcoin poll: Should the "WuProp@Home" BOINC project be removed from the Gridcoin whitelist?

in #gridcoin8 years ago (edited)

What is the "WuProp@Home" BOINC project?

WUProp@home is a non-intensive project that uses Internet-connected computers to collect workunits properties of BOINC projects such as computation time, memory requirements, checkpointing interval or report limit.

Why are users requesting WuProp's removal?

It's being manipulated

Recently it's come to the Gridcoin community's attention that individuals within team Gridcoin are exploiting WuProp's credit system to inflate their magnitude significantly in an attempt to earn Gridcoin fraudulently.

If you look at the WuProp team leaderboard on Boincstats, you will notice that the individual "HackerChai" has a RAC 37.83 times higher than the entire pool (which is made up of 1247 individuals). Check his magnitude too.

It doesn't provide useful data

The data provided by WuProp is measured in seconds instead of RAC and it doesn't provide an API for 3rd party reference - this means that collected data can't be used for profitability generators, only for simply comparing hardware for work units on an individual project basis.

More useful information is provided by each BOINC project's Host.xml file - it provides RAC for hardware/software, which could be used for profitability calculators.

It doesn't utilise SSL encryption properly

Check out wuprop's SSL test.
Effectively, this means that your BOINC credentials could potentially be intercepted by a man in the middle (if on a public wifi/insecure network/etc).

How can I vote?

I am a bit surprised it has taken this long to get a vote up for removal of wuprop.

Good riddance I say and have voted to remove it.

This could increase my magnitude. :)

@cm-steem do we actually know the user is cheating, perhaps they are an admin on a huge farm of VMs? The pool on BOINCstats shows 127 hosts for WUPROP.
I just want to make sure we are voting based on the right reasons. Would we blacklist every project on the suspicion of cheating?

An user can be kicked from the team by Rob if he chose to take that action.

There are multiple more reasons for removing wuprop (as detailed in the main post), not just because of the individual cheating the reward mechanism.

Simply Great Information and Presentation
