Time for a change
I think I've reached the point where I'm going to have to change amicable numbers as I've discovered that I'm doing more work but it's mag is starting to drop.
I was dreading when this would eventually happen, as I haven't spent time figuring out what the other GPU works do on the system. I think the comparing how many people verses rate of return is the worst, not because it's boring but because there's a lot of Math involved.
But a week ago I was making 22 Gridcoin a day, but now I've dropped to...
Normally I would be asking what other people are working on, but I don't think that'll work this time as the more people on a project brings the mag down for everybody.
Change is good though. Change keeps life from stagnating.
To make selecting a new project easier, there are two great options:
Doesn't the practice of searching for the lowest RAC project trouble you a bit? Like, we're promoting adding computing power to projects that no one would otherwise care about helping?
That is exactly right - the reward mechanism is set up in such a way that it promotes even spread of compute power across all whitelisted projects. That's great, isn't it? =)
Searching for the lowest RAC projects takes very little time, and with an account manager like BAM! I can switch my machines over to a new project in a minute flat.
Apparently a lot of people think that's the right way to do it, but I think it's the wrong approach. IMO projects people think are most useful to society should have greater reward to encourage work on those. There's a reason most BOINC users are working on projects like SETI, WCG, and Rosetta instead of Amicable Numbers and YAFU. They believe in the usefulness of the former and not the latter. Argh... it really bothers me how the rewards are set up. We should vote on which projects are most important and calculate a mag multiplier based on number of votes each project receives.
Being a scientist myself, I see where you're coming from - but I'll also have to point out that this is a VERY slippery slope you are entering on that thought.
What really IS most useful for society? Many people prefer applied research over basic research, as the former leads to more immediately obvious benefits. However, much of that applied research would not even be possible without the foundations laid down by basic research.
Something similar applies to the field of biomedical research. Back in 2008, a politician from Alaska ranted against "fruit fly research" - why would we even study fruit flies when we could spend that money instead to research medical problems in people, on real diseases that people suffer form? Doesn't that benefit society more? Problem is, much of the basic research that is needed to research new, promising therapeutic options in human medicine needs basic genetic research that is often conducted in fruit flies. There you go...
I'd never say that my field of research is more important than anyone else's. A reasonable approach to science is the following: You'll never now what's going to come out at the end. Famously, Fleming discovered Penicillin when he found mold growing on some test plates he left in his lab, and the mold killed the bacterial cultures around it - pure accident. This sparked a medical revolution that has since saved billions (!) of human lives and made many infectious diseases a problem of the past.
So, no - I'd not dare to evaluate how "useful" any field of research is for humanity. A bit of humility would be called for, I think - and therefore I think that every project on the Gridcoin whitelist is worth of the donation of volunteer computing power in the same way. Consequences stemming from the "utility for society", whether real, perceived, or a carefully constructed publicity strategy, should be reserved for decisions on the individual level ("Which project do I WANT to contribute to?) and not institutionalized through Gridcoin mechanisms.
We already vote on if projects should be in the whitelist, and therefore up for reward. That essentially gives us control over what projects the community considers valuable. Even so, do you think that is not a good system?
My main problem with the whitelist is that it's an all or nothing thing. You're either on the whitelist, and 100% equal to all other well-established projects, or completely excluded. There is no in between for new projects we might be unsure of.
Yeppers mix it up bro. I am prepping to put a couple gpus online but I tend to keep three projects on for each box no matter what. Respect brother GRC.
