Here on Symi, during the refugee crisis in the summer of 2015, when we had families sleeping on the street, the response of the locals was amazing. In defiance of the late despoti who demonstrated some very unchristian and unGreek behaviour, many Symiots provided laundry services, food, toys, showers, toiletries and many other forms of assistance to women and children in need.
