Kreta ist das Ziel (Crete is the goal)

Seit vielen Jahren sind wir mit Griechenland und besonders Kreta verbunden. Vor mehr als 35 Jahren hat alles angefangen, als wir mit einer Jugend-Gruppe eine abenteuerliche Reise durch Jugoslawien nach Hellas machten.
Seitdem hat es uns nicht mehr losgelassen und nach etlichen weiteren Urlauben auf dem Peloponnes und auf Kreta, wurde der Traum vom Leben unter griechischer Sonne immer mehr zu einem Plan.
Also, auf die Rente warten und dann ab nach Hellas? Vielleicht lässt es sich ja auch schon etwas früher verwirklichen? Aber, wenn man nicht gerade reich ist, fehlt dazu wohl das nötige Kapital. Oder könnte man auch dort für seinen Lebensunterhalt sorgen?

Aber in einem Krisenland haben selbst die Einheimischen, oft gut gebildet, ihre Schwierigkeiten damit. Was könnte man denn dort so unternehmen, um ein bißchen Geld zu verdienen? Darauf haben wir nie eine wirkliche Antwort gefunden. Gut leben kann man auf Kreta, auch recht preiswert, daß haben wir schnell gemerkt. Geld verdienen kann man aber viel leichter in Nord-Europa.
Um es kurz zu machen: mit unserem “Doc Friday” Business versuchen wir in der Welt des Onlinehandels Fuß zu fassen. Zur Zeit von der Schweiz aus, mit einem in Estland registriertem Unternehmen. Sollte sich das nach einer gewissen Zeit, vielleicht zwei, drei Jahren, profitabel umsetzen lassen, könnte man das grundsätzlich von überall aus betreiben. Auch von Kreta aus. Eventuell auch mit kretischen Produkten.
Doch bis dahin ist noch viel zu lernen und aufzubauen. Das Geschäft über Amazon ist kein einfaches. Und wie das funktioniert und was man verkaufen könnte, muss man sich erstmal aneignen. Ob es für uns funktionieren wird, muss die Zeit zeigen.

Das Haus ist schon seit einigen Jahren nicht mehr bewohnt, hat aber eine gute Substanz.

Ein Häuschen in einem Dorf, ca. 15 KM von der Nordküste entfernt, haben wir schon ins Auge gefasst. Es würde zu unserem Budget passen, hat aber auch einiges an Zuwendung unsererseits nötig. Letzten Herbst haben wir schon mal ein wenig dort aufgeräumt und erste Kontakte geknüpft. Die Menschen sind unglaublich offen und hilfsbereit. Obwohl wir nur jeweils einige Stunden an ein paar Tagen dort waren, wurden wir mehrmals von den Nachbarn eingeladen und bewirtet. Die kretische Gastfreundschaft ist wohl kaum zu überbieten.

Im und um das Dorf herum wird Wein angebaut und gekeltert, und der Olivenanbau ist ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt in der Gegend. Ausserdem gibt es einige, teils berühmte antike Stätten in der Nachbarschaft. Wir denken, daß es schlechtere Orte gibt, sein Dasein zu fristen. Über die nahe gelegene Schnellstraße ist man in ca. 15-2o Minuten am Meer, Flughafen, Hafen und Stadt. In die entgegen gesetzte Richtung kommt man an die Südküste mit atemberaubenden Landschaften und Küstenörtchen. Und wer gerne mal einen Schnaps trinkt, ist hier auch genau richtig. Der Raki wird aus den Resten der Weinherstellung im Herbst gebrannt.
Aber vielleicht besuchst Du uns in ein paar Jahren mal dort und schaust es Dir selber an. Wie es alles weiter geht, können wir, falls es Dich interessiert, ja hier schreiben. Und wenn Du Anmerkungen oder Fragen hast, lass es uns wissen.

For many years we have been connected with Greece and especially Crete. It all started more than 35 years ago when we made an adventurous journey through Yugoslavia to Hellas with a youth group.
Since then it has not let us go and after several more holidays on the Peloponnese and Crete, the dream of living under the Greek sun became more and more a plan.
So, wait for the pension and then off to Hellas? Maybe it can be realized a little earlier? But if you're not rich, you probably don't have the necessary capital. Or could you also make a living there?

But in a crisis country even the locals, often well educated, have their difficulties with it. What could be done there to earn a little money? We have never found a real answer. You can live well on Crete, also quite cheaply, we quickly noticed that. But it is much easier to earn money in Northern Europe.
To make a long story short: with our "Doc Friday" Business we try to gain a foothold in the world of online trade. Currently from Switzerland, with a company registered in Estonia. If after a certain period of time, perhaps two or three years, this can be implemented profitably, you could basically do it from anywhere. Even from Crete. Possibly also with Cretan products.
But there is still a lot to learn and build up in the meantime. Business via Amazon is not easy. And how that works and what you could sell must first be acquired. Time will tell whether it will work for us.

The house has not been inhabited for several years, but it has a good substance.

We have already considered a little house in a village about 15 km away from the north coast. It would fit to our budget, but it also needs a lot of attention on our part. Last autumn we cleaned up a bit and made first contacts. The people are incredibly open and helpful. Although we only spent a few hours there on a few days, we were invited and entertained several times by our neighbours. The Cretan hospitality is hard to beat.

In and around the village wine is cultivated and pressed, and olive growing is another important aspect in the area. There are also some, partly famous, ancient sites in the neighbourhood. We think that there are worse places to live. The nearby expressway takes about 15-2o minutes to reach the sea, airport, port and city. In the opposite direction you reach the south coast with breathtaking landscapes and coastal villages. And for those who like to drink a serious liquor, this is exactly the right place. The Raki is distilled from the remains of the wine production in autumn.
