The Horn of Amalthea (or the Horn of Abundance) - Greek Mythology

in #greece8 years ago

When Zeus was still little, playing with Amalthea one day, without intending too, he broke one of her horns. Amalthea became very sad and Zeus, in order to comfort her, blessed the horn and made it “a horn of abundance”. From within it, whatever one desired, they found: vegetables and fruits, honey, oil and wine, all the earth’s fruits and whatever one could ask for. When Amalthea died, Zeus turned her into a star. He dressed his shield with her hide, which was named the Auspices, and it protected whoever held it. That’s why today we say the phrase “under the auspices of someone…”, which means under the protection of someone.
