Great Performances - A trip through some amazing musical memories # 6: Ruby Turner - Stay With Me Baby (The one I listen to when I get dumped!)

A bit of a difference here with this 'Great Performance'. Firstly, it's a cover version, and secondly, it's just a music video. This doesn't take anything away from the song and the performance, however.....

Because it is bloody fabulous.

The song, Stay With Me Baby was originally recorded by a fairly unknown Soul singer in the 60's called Lorraine Ellison. I've listened to it a number of times and it just doesn't really do much for me. The song has also being covered a multitude of times and a wide range of artists, many of which I've listened to, but it's this particular recording that rises head and shoulders above the rest.

Ruby Turner has such a wonderful mournful soul to her voice when she performs this and the desperation and heartache of being ditched echoes in the angst in her voice.

I actually met Ruby Turner, OK, quickly gushed a 'hello' and 'I loved your performance' kind of thing after a gig I saw her do at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club in London many moons ago. She is brilliant live and runs through a whole range of soul, Pop and RnB and animates the show with her amazing smile and lively repartee.

I've also seen her with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra with whom she regularly tours.

A story about one of my break-ups? No, lol..no salacious gossip from my past tonight, and in any case, there have been far too many dumpings too single one out for special attention. That would be unfair.

So, listen to this. In fact, this is so good it's worth getting dumped just so you can sit in a dark room sobbing, head in hands and playing this track on loop. It's THAT good!

This will be the third Soul Queen from my collection, but the first Brit. Ruby Turner just goes to show that the UK Soul scene is in great shape.
