Great Performances - A trip through some amazing musical memories #2 - Randy Crawford

Back to the 80's again tonight and another heart rending performance and vocal from the totally adorable Randy Crawford.

I could have picked from a multitude of Randy Crawford tracks because she's never recorded anything bad but I'm choosing this TOTP performance of Almaaz from 1987 because unlike most other performers around this time who lip-synced, she sang a flawless live vocal.

Randy Crawford was arguably more successful in the UK than the US with a multitude of top 40 singles whereas in the US she never entered the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist.

For me, her voice manages a unique combination of purity and emotion, not generally mutually inclusive bedfellows but she pulls it off with a natural ease in this track. Her style is effortless and her constant smile enchanting, who could fail to love her?

Randy Crawford is now 66 and sounds just as amazing today as she did back in the day. A live performance at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival earlier this week which was broadcast live on Radio2 testament to this. Well worth a listen if you're in the UK and can get on the BBC iPlayer.

One final interesting fact I discovered when reading up was that despite her being American, and proving the love us Brits have for her, she was actually given the award of 'Best British Female Solo Artist' at the 1982 Brit Awards!

So without further ado, ladies and gentleman, relax, dim the lights and fall in love with Randy Crawford singing 'Almaaz'.....I think it's us who are the 'lucky, lucky things'.
