All but two Adelie penguin chicks have starved to death in their east Antarctic colony, in a breeding season described as "catastrophic" by experts.
It was caused by unusually high amounts of ice late in the season, meaning adults had to travel further for food.
It is the second bad season in five years after no chicks survived in 2015.
Conservation groups are calling for urgent action on a new marine protection area in the east Antarctic to protect the colony of about 36,000.
WWF says a ban on krill fishing in the area would eliminate their competition and help to secure the survival of Antarctic species, including the Adelie penguins.

Cold, rain kill at least 4 000 sheep in East Cape

Eastern Cape sheep farmers are still counting their losses after cold and rain swept across the north of the province, killing thousands of sheep.
Farmers in and around Barkly East – still reeling after runaway fires devastated the region last month – have been hit by temperatures well below freezing, coupled with rain and snow, causing massive damage to herds where wool producers sheared their sheep earlier this month.
Early estimates are that a minimum of 4 000 sheep have died across the province since the weekend, when temperatures dropped below -10°C and 100mm of rain fell in places, and some farmers lost up to a quarter, or even half, of their entire flocks.

Yes, Josh Frydenberg, climate change is real. It has been changing over the 4.6 billion years since Earth formed, as is plainly obvious in the geological record. However, it has nothing to do with the minuscule one molecule of CO2 in every 2500 molecules of other gases in the atmosphere.
Analysis of the data reveals that there is a high probability that the correlation between CO2 concentration and temperature is zero; that is, CO2 has no effect on the atmospheric temperature. But a comparison of the rate of change of CO2 concentration relative to temperature provides a significant probability that temperature controls the rate of change of CO2.

The death toll caused by the latest round of severe flooding across central and northern Vietnam has risen to 54 and the number of missing to 39, country's disaster agency said Friday, October 13. This is the fourth wave of severe flooding to hit Vietnam in several months and the end of the misery is still not over as another storm is on the way and expected to hit Vietnam's central regions late October 16 or early on the 17th (UTC).
The floods that hit Vietnam this week starting on Monday, October 9 after Tropical Depression 23 made landfall are the worst in years, officials said. The death toll has risen to 54 and there are now 39 people missing.
Nineteen people from four neighboring households in Hoa Binh Province were buried alive after a landslide struck around 01:00 local time Thursday, October 12, but only nine bodies have been found, the disaster agency said.
There are at least 317 homes destroyed in floods and landslides and more than 34 000 submerged or damaged. More than 200 000 people have been ordered to evacuate.
In addition, more than 22 000 ha (54 300 acres) of agricultural land (mostly rice) have also been damaged and around 180 000 animals killed or washed away.
Over a three-day period (Monday - Wednesday), some parts of central and northern Vietnam recorded up to 500 mm (19.7 inches) of rain.
