Graffiti on the streets of Medellin, Colombia.

in #graffiti7 years ago

The city of Medellin is thriving after the very publicised war on drugs against the infamous crime kingpin, Pablo Escobar.

The city uses art to transform areas that were once very dangerous into beacons of hope for it's residents. Communa 13 was considered the most dangerous neighbourhood in the world only a decade ago, with homicide rates through the roof. SubstandardFullSizeRender 2.jpg

Now, the "barrio" is a hub of expression, alive with artists, hip-hop dancers, and curious tourists coming to marvel at the transformative wonder. SubstandardFullSizeRender.jpg

The art is in every direction, and symbolises hope. But perhaps more importantly, it serves as a warning that people should not easily forget the atrocities of a not so distant era. SubstandardFullSizeRender 3.jpg SubstandardFullSizeRender 5.jpgIMG_2991.JPG
